How to Get Your Site Cited in Perplexity AI (Step-by-Step)

Perplexity now drives meaningful referral traffic. Here's the playbook for becoming a frequently-cited source.

Perplexity AI crossed 100 million monthly active users and publishers are noticing it in their referral dashboards. Unlike Google, Perplexity doesn't bury your link in position 7. If you're cited, you're in the source strip — visible to every user who reads that answer. If you're not cited, you get nothing.

Getting cited is learnable. Here's how Perplexity picks its sources and what you can do to earn a consistent spot.

How Perplexity Selects Sources

Perplexity is not a search engine in the traditional sense. It runs queries against a combination of its own index (powered largely by Brave Search) and real-time web retrieval, then passes those results to a large language model that synthesizes an answer.

Source selection happens at two stages:

Stage 1 — Retrieval. Perplexity pulls a candidate set of pages relevant to the query. Getting into this set requires being indexed by Brave Search with reasonable relevance for the topic. Brave's index weighs freshness and structural clarity more than Google does. A page that hasn't been updated since 2021 often fails to make the candidate set even if it ranks on Google.

Stage 2 — Citation selection. The LLM reads the candidate pages and decides which ones to cite inline. Pages that contain direct, unambiguous answers — especially ones phrased as questions and answers — get cited more often than pages that bury the answer in paragraph five.

This is why two competing pages that both rank on Google can get very different treatment from Perplexity: the structural clarity of the content matters more than the domain authority.

The 6-Step Playbook

Step 1: Publish Fresh, Dated Content

Perplexity's retrieval system down-ranks stale content aggressively. Every content page should have a visible publication date and an accurate updatedAt date in its metadata. When you revise a post, actually update the date — and actually revise the content, not just the date.

For competitive topics, aim to refresh high-priority pages every 3–6 months at minimum. Add new data, update statistics, and flag any claims that have changed.

Step 2: Establish Clear Entity Associations

Each page should be unambiguously about one entity — a concept, tool, product, or process. Perplexity's LLM is pattern-matching for authoritative pages on a specific topic. If your page meanders across five subtopics, it's harder to cite confidently.

Lead your first paragraph with the primary entity. Name it explicitly, define it, and establish context in the first 100 words. Everything after that should reinforce the same entity focus.

Step 3: Add Schema Markup

Structured data makes your page machine-readable. Perplexity's crawlers can extract information from FAQ schema, HowTo schema, and Article schema faster and more reliably than from raw prose.

At minimum, add Article schema to every post and FAQPage schema to any page with a question-and-answer section. The FAQ items you include in schema are often cited verbatim in Perplexity answers.

Step 4: Format Sections as Explicit Q&A

Structure your H2 and H3 headings as questions. Follow each question heading with a direct answer in the first sentence of that section — before any qualifications, context, or caveats.

Bad: "The relationship between schema markup and AI citations is nuanced and depends on several factors..."

Good: "FAQ schema is the single most commonly cited schema type in Perplexity answers."

The direct-answer pattern is what LLMs extract when building synthesized responses. If your answer is buried, it won't make it into the citation.

Step 5: Enable Your Site in llms.txt

Create an llms.txt file at your site root that tells LLM crawlers which pages are your most important and what each covers. Include your highest-value content pages with short descriptions.

Perplexity has confirmed it reads llms.txt files during crawling. An explicit allow signal increases your chances of being included in the candidate retrieval set for relevant queries.

See how to create an llms.txt file for the exact format.

Step 6: Build Brand Authority Signals

Perplexity's LLM correlates source credibility with how often a brand is mentioned across other sources — not just how many backlinks point to it. Third-party mentions on credible sites build the brand authority signal that makes Perplexity confident citing you.

Focus on:

  • Guest posts on established publications in your niche
  • Being quoted as an expert in other articles
  • Community mentions in forums, subreddits, and newsletters where your topic is discussed
  • Podcast appearances that get transcribed and published

These don't need to include a dofollow link. A brand mention in relevant context contributes to the authority signal.

How to Track Your Perplexity Citations

Tracking Perplexity citations is harder than tracking Google rankings because there's no Perplexity Search Console equivalent. The practical methods:

Manual spot-checking. Query your target keywords in Perplexity directly and look for your site in the source strip. This doesn't scale but gives you quick signal on whether you're showing up at all.

Referral traffic. Check your analytics for perplexity.ai as a referral source. Growing referral traffic is a downstream signal that your citation rate is increasing — but it lags changes by days or weeks.

Dedicated tracking tools. Tools like RankCrab track AI Overview citations across Google, and purpose-built GEO monitoring tools cover Perplexity specifically. Set up tracking for your highest-priority keywords so you get systematic data rather than manual spot-checks.

What Not to Do

Don't keyword-stuff. Perplexity's LLM reads for semantic meaning, not keyword frequency. A page that repeats its target keyword seventeen times reads worse to an LLM than a page that answers the question clearly once.

Don't chase thin content. Short pages with no original contribution rarely make the candidate set for competitive queries. If a 200-word page is all you have on a topic, expand it.

Don't ignore the Brave index. Perplexity uses Brave's index for retrieval. If your site isn't indexed by Brave, you're invisible to Perplexity regardless of how good your content is. Submit your sitemap to Brave Search via their webmaster tools.

The Compounding Effect

Perplexity citations and Google AI Overview citations often overlap. A page formatted for one tends to perform well in the other. The work you put into Q&A structure, schema markup, entity clarity, and content freshness compounds across platforms.

That's the core argument for GEO as a discipline: the same structural investments that make you citable on Perplexity make you citable on ChatGPT Search, Bing Copilot, and Google AI Overviews. You're not building for one platform — you're building content that AI systems in general can trust and cite.
