Turn five competing pages into one useful content brief

Use a worked comparison matrix to find what readers need, avoid copying competitors, and brief an article with an original contribution.

Five public pages reviewed September 12, 2026. Coverage observations are editorial notes, not a ranking report or hands-on product comparison.

Define the reader and the decision

Example brief: a freelance designer needs a client onboarding checklist. The reader wants to know what to collect, in what order, and what happens if information is missing. The deliverable is a usable checklist with an example—not a generic introduction to freelancing.

Five actual pages, one comparison matrix

We reviewed the five linked pages below for the same task: briefing a freelance designer’s client-onboarding checklist. They are relevant competing resources, not a claim about their current search positions. The final column is our editorial adaptation, not an allegation that a page is defective.

The finished brief

Working title: “Freelance designer client onboarding checklist: from signed scope to kickoff.” Promise: help a solo designer collect the necessary information and start work with fewer unresolved decisions. Opening: a short checklist grouped into before kickoff, at kickoff, and before production.

  • Include a table with the item, owner, deadline, and consequence of a missing answer.
  • Add a fictional completed example for a small website project.
  • Explain how to collect brand files, access, approval contacts, and content responsibilities.
  • Keep credentials out of ordinary intake text; use the client’s approved access-sharing process.
  • Offer an editable worksheet and a relevant next step.

Give the writer a quality bar

Do not average competing word counts or treat repeated headings as mandatory keywords. Every section should help the stated reader complete the job. The original contribution here is the completed example and responsibility table.

Acceptance check: can a designer copy the worksheet and know what to request next? If not, more background paragraphs will not repair the brief. Review factual claims against primary sources before publication.
